Billing FAQ
Q1. Why do you bill on events instead of users?
Because per-user billing punishes you for growing — it is the #1 pricing complaint in this market. VWO customers report renewal quotes doubling, with founders saying they feel punished for growing and having to calculate every month whether they can afford to A/B test.2 Under ABsmartly's published formula, running more experiments multiplies your exposure-event bill.3 Events align cost with what you measure: your bill grows with the value you get, not the traffic you send.
Q2. What counts as an event?
One event = one variant assignment/exposure call (client or server) plus every tracked event you post to the tracking API (goals, conversions, custom events, page-views if instrumented). SDK bootstrap and health pings don't count.
Q3. What happens when I hit my volume cap?
When you reach your plan's event limit, new exposures and conversions pause and we prompt you to upgrade — your tests, settings, and past results stay untouched. You never get a surprise bill. This follows the hard-stop-at-cap models in the market, such as Kameleoon, where experiments stop at the cap after a usage warning.4
Q4. Do you bill monthly or by longer commitment?
Monthly. Longer lock-ins are the market's pattern — yearly-only plans, multi-year contracts, and quote-gated sales calls — and we publish our prices on this page instead.5 No longer-term plan or discount is published yet.
Q5. Is export really free on every tier — including Free?
Yes. One-click results/events CSV, JSON, and the results API ship on every tier at no charge. Elsewhere this is routinely paywalled: VWO gates API access to Enterprise, Statsig gates cloud sync and its Data Export API to Enterprise, Optimizely's Events Export (nightly Parquet to S3/GCS) is an Enterprise add-on, and Kameleoon quotas exports with unlimited as a paid add-on.6
Q6. Do higher tiers unlock extra features?
No — with one honest exception. Every analytic feature is on every tier; tiers scale on event volume. The exception is the compute layer, not features: scheduled warehouse sync (when it ships) is Enterprise, because scheduled compute costs us per run. Nothing else is gated — that is the whole point.
Q7. Can I buy right now?
Not yet — these are published list prices, and paid tiers activate when billing opens. You can start free today: build and run real tests on the Free tier. Create your first test.
